I have built some of these in the past and a raspberry pi would handle a lot of the same with Retropi and this is basically what is happening here but its not using a pi. The Kinhawk is using a Linux based OS and using Emuelec while all of this is technically free you would have to use the right components and of course build it yourself. I would argue that is what you are buying here, time and effort. This works perfect out of the box with none of the headache.While it doesn’t strictly state what games are available (and you can add more if you wish) it goes as far as Playstation which is pretty good for such a small little thing. I have tested the N64, Playstation & Dreamcast and all run great, i would say these are likely the heavier hitters for the emulation so thumbs up there. The menus are simple and easy to use for browsing the game library but it can be a little fiddly to get used to some of the more advanced menus, especially if you dont know what you are doing.They did a pretty good job of locking it down, basically stops you from breaking it too much since outside of the UI elements you can potentially cause issues, it is a linux device after all. But once you understand the basic buttons and layout etc its pretty simple. I found that to go back to the main games list (when in a game) you hold select and press start twice. I didn’t think this was mentioned very well.The controllers you can take or leave they are really basic and require two batteries each (not included) but they work perfectly for the retro style games. As a bonus they throw in a USB hub, presumably for additional controllers and a remote for the TV element which honestly i likely wont use but it allows android apps to be installed. I think this a great little device, its pretty basic in it build, its a free emulator on a free OS which you could build at home but for you to be able to simply plug it in and have a gaming library ready to go i think its great!

TDLR: The juice isn’t worth the squeeze…
I expected more from Kinhank. I don’t know why either, but I just did.This emulator box is running batocera from the included SD card and it will also boot into an ancient version of Android if you remove the SD card and let it boot from it’s internal ROM. It’s like Android 7 or something ancient like that, so basically no apps work, not that you’re buying this thing for that anyways.Sticking with the Batocera and emulation aspect of this device: It is lacking in usability and polish.Basically nothing works, either in an optomized ways (for modern displays), or at all.Some of the most basic 8-bit systems won’t boot all all. See the attached video. It isn’t even properly configured out of the box to run Sega Master System (anything can run that btw).It isn’t that the hardware isn’t powerful enough to run it. It’s that the emulators are not configured properly and are also out of date.When I switched emulator cores, I did get a SMS game to boot, but it was broken. Could not play it. I’m confident with further tinkering that I could get SMS running fine, but do I want to put that much time into getting the easiest 8-bit games working? No.I did try PS1 and with some configuration I was able to get several games to boot and play without issue. Even with upscaling and crt filters applied (only then were the visuals “acceptable”)Here are the key themes/takeaways if you’re going to get this:1. You NEED to be familar with Retro Arch and how it’s menus and options work (and how to reveal the interface elements that they have hidden by default)…seriously… they did that! Why!?2. You NEED to know how to remap controller inputs because they’re CRAZY wrong out of the box (They give you a PS style remote, but the mapping is some horrible abortion of PS1/Xbox/Nintendo style mapping that will result in you ALWAYS pressing the wrong key!)3. You NEED to modulate your expectations with this device. Meaning that this is not a power house. You’re not going to run any 3D system (other than PS1) with any kind of upscaling (and even PS1 is limited to a 2x upscale). Visuals on all emulators will suffer. Enabling a CRT filter is a must just to reduce some of the “jaggies”.The only reason I’m giving it 3-stars instead of 1, is because there’s hope here for those how have time, patience and knowledge. (I have two of those, but not the critical one, which is patience)This is a 1-star device for those who want to “pickup and play”. You’re not going to enjoy this.Unless Kinhank stars shipping this device with already properly tested and optomized emulator settings and proper “psx controler” style key mapping (I say this because those are the type of generic controllers that are included), then I imagine that there’s going to be a little message at the bottom of this listing that says “WARNING: This is a frequently returned item…”, which you see from time to time on these types of devices.People get them and get frustrated with the right away because they simply do not work properly out of the box.I, myself, am an experience retro emulator device enthusiast, but even this pushed the limits of my willingness to make it work.This is one of those devices, that even if you took the time to set it up properly, you’re still going to be a little disappointed because it can’t handle the higher end stuff that you’d use to justify your efforts in making it work.

Cheaper than the one I got in 2022
Since I also have the 2022 version of the Kinhank X-Pro, I was curious how much better the 2025 version might be in comparison. While the 2022 version boasted more games, many of those ROMS were duplicates or non-working titles. This time around, Kinhank has cleaned up the library and refreshed the interface.There is a virtually endless supply of games here; too many to test out individually. The ones I did try, however, all played very well. A few of them had to be tweaked with emulator settings and display ratios, but they all worked. Everything is well organized on the EmuElec interface.Aside from the game library reorganization and the better GUI, I’m not finding much difference between the 2022 and 2025 versions. The controllers are exactly same, as is the game box itself. The biggest difference is the actual price. I paid quite a bit more for the first iteration of the X-Pro three years ago. This newer version is about $50 cheaper in 2025 despite the fact nearly everything else has gone up in price since then.If you have been thinking about getting a Kinhank X-pro game box, this is probably your best option.
