    Addicting platforming action
Let me start by saying I am not be the typical aged person to buy this game, I am 21 years old and play pretty much everything from rated E platforming games to rated M gore fests. I like to diversify, and to me, a good game is a good game. This game seems to have a perfect mix between difficulty and enjoyment, and I’m glad I bought it based on how much I liked the SNES originals alone. I have never played the older version they made for the Wii, but I imagine it would be just as fun and not have changed my opinion to buy it for 3DS. I’ll break this review down into a few key sections:Gameplay: 5/5This is the game’s best point, in my opinion. Most actions are performed by combination of the circle pad, A/B, X/Y, and L/R. These controls adapt to what terrain or situation you’re facing in the game, and do so very intelligently and intuitively. They’re also very easy to grasp from the start. Even though it’s been 5-10 years since I last played the SNES original Donkey Kong Country, I still had its controls firmly ingrained in my brain. This game shows you the main moves and important commands in the first few levels, and that was enough to completely change my play style from the old to the new. I also like the ability to hold L or R and climb around on hanging grass/vines, as it adds a much deeper vertical element to the game. Diddy Kong is also a welcome return, and although he isn’t used in the same way as previous games in the series, he is still useful and your experience in a level will be much different(maybe even tougher) without him riding on your back.Difficulty: 3/5 for most, 1-2/5 for experienced gamersI personally don’t find this game too difficult. I have yet to encounter a level I can not pass on the first or second try, and am over 3/4 the way through all the levels. The boss battles may be a little tougher, but they stay true to the old Donkey Kong Country games. Keep moving, evade attacks regularly, learn their attack order, and you’ll probably only lose once or not at all for most boss encounters. The only thing that makes this game more difficult in certain spots is the loss of Diddy Kong. His ability to jetpack you through the air and slow your falls is very useful, especially when tackling large bosses. Or enemies that take forever to get out of your way…..Plot: 3/5The plot is pretty standard for a platforming driven game. Most of the story is delivered in little 20-30 second cut scenes. Basically, someone has stolen Donkey Kong’s banana hoard (again), and this time it’s the evil Tiki masks, and not King K. Rool. The cut scenes introduce you to the bosses and levels that you’ll be playing, and that’s OK. A big meaty plot would ruin the game’s pick-up and play charm.New Additions 5/5Some new additions to this game make it refreshing and just as enjoyable as the old school SNES games. For example, one of this game’s big differences is the 3d depth changes. Some of the maps with cannons will fire DK towards you and away from you on the screen, and you’ll have to complete trickier sections in smaller view so you have less room for error. This adds some challenge to levels that would otherwise be humdrum and straightforward. The banana tokens to unlock barred access stages and other items in each world are a good addition, and you never feel like they’re too hard to collect or you’re spending too many on map unlocks. They also make going back through each level and getting all the puzzle pieces (also a new feature) and KONG letters worth more than just completion percentage. In all, this is a very solid reboot, even though it’s been out for a few years already on the Wii. The added portability of a 3DS console just makes sense, and you can take these little exciting platform levels with you almost anywhere you go. I think my absolute favorite thing about this game is that for all the graphic, game play, and item updates, they managed to retain the sheer enjoyment and great level atmospheres that have had me playing Donkey Kong games since I was old enough to hold a controller.

A masterpiece in the truest sense of the word
I’ve been a fan of the Donkey Kong Country series ever since the original launched for the Super Nintendo all those years ago. And having beaten all games in the series, I have the unique experience to share a thoughtful review for anyone considering buying this game. For those who don’t know, Donkey Kong Country’s roots lie in the glory days of the Super NES, with a trilogy hailed by many to be three of the finest games ever developed. Unfortunately, Nintendo strayed from those roots on the N64 and Gamecube, leaving fans with nothing more than mediocre DK bongo drum games to fill the void. Thankfully, after the Wii came on the scene, the franchise was put in the hands of, in my opinion, THE best developer in the game right now, the infamous RETRO Studios (known for their game-changing Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Gamecube/Wii). And the rest was history. Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii delivered what fans had been craving for 20 years, a return to form with enough dazzle to satisfy even the most rigid of fans. The game is possibly THE funnest I’ve played since the Wii era began, quite possibly due to it’s challenging, fun, nostalgia-filled-yet-fresh nature. Games lose my interest often when there is no challenge, and considering the handicapped difficulty of modern gaming, there are few that really reach out and grab me. Donkey Kong Country Returns defies that policy and really breaks the mold, just as the original trilogy did a few decades ago. As for the 3DS version, everything has been ported as it was without lost features (with maybe one exception), with only minor changes to fit the less-powerful hardware and smaller screen. For instance, the graphics have understandably been slightly scaled down, and the player icon on the world map has a medallion instead of Donkey Kong (probably due to how small and hard to see he would have been). Everything looks and plays the same- it’s the same amazing game, just portable and with 3D. As for added content, there’s an entire new world to play. In the original, you could unlock a final temple stage, whereas in this 3DS edition, they’ve added an entire world of 8 new levels to unlock and play before continuing to the final temple. And you don’t need to collect all the puzzle pieces to get there, just the KONG letters (a difficult, but not insurmountable task). Also added is a NEW MODE, which tones the difficulty down for anyone who so desires. In this mode, you get one extra heart for DK and one extra for Diddy, and can purchase extras in Cranky’s Shop such as a green balloon that saves you from a fall, a DK barrel which can be used on demand during a stage, and invincibility potions. The ONE gripe I have with this game is no fault of the game itself, but incidentally the delivery method. The game is extremely busy, and during some of the more hectic, high-octane sections of the game, it can be hard to see everything happening on the small screen of the 3DS. It’ by no means a dealbreaker, and perhaps a 3DS XL would negate this concern. Furthermore, the added NEW MODE could counter the added difficulty of the busy screen, thereby neutralizing any added difficulty. All in all, this is one of the best games made in the last 5 years, possibly even longer, and should not be missed by anyone who loves good games. Quite often, people buy a console/handheld and soon lose interest because they believe there’s “no good games”. On the contrary, there are a plethora of good games for Wii AND 3DS, you just have to know which games those are. This game is a masterpiece, in the truest sense of the word, and anyone who passes this up will have have lost all credibility claiming there are no good games for the 3DS.
